All funding will be awarded through competitions. This means applications for each competition will be judged, and only the successful ones will be funded.
The programme’s aims are:
- Help farmers, growers and foresters increase productivity, sustainability and resilience
- Reduce the environmental impact of agriculture and horticulture
- Apply agricultural research to provide real benefits for farmers, growers and foresters
- Use science to develop solutions for the practical challenges in agriculture and horticulture
To get funding, you must work in collaboration with a team.
Several rounds of funding have now been announced. Successful projects from applications in October 2021 have been announced by UKRI here and here, including the first round of Research Starter projects.
Competitions include:
- Large R&D Partnership projects - deadline 29 June 2022
- Farming Futures R&D Fund: Climate Smart Farming - deadline 18 May 2022
- Research Starter projects - Round 2 opened May 2022
- Farming Futures R&D Fund: Sustainable farm-based Proteins - deadline 21 September 2022
- £12.5 million is available for research and development to enhance the productivity and environmental impact of proteins that are grown or raised by farmers, split across early stage feasibility projects, and industrial research projects. We will fund a wide range of projects - from traditional livestock and plant production to novel animal feeds/supplements, agroforestry and the bioeconomy. Project size is from £200k to £1M.

- Small R&D Projects Round 2 - deadline 2 Nov 2022
- Farming Futures (theme 3: Automation and robotics, Experimental Development) - deadline 15 March 2023
- Research Starter (round 3) - upcoming deadline Mar 2023
- Large R&D partnerships (round 2) - upcoming deadline Apr 2023
