Using insects as food and feed is a fast-growing industry. Join this exciting debate where we discuss the challenges and opportunities that are faced with an expert panel.

The Food and Feed conference will bring together a diverse range of people from across the industry including scientists, farmers, food technologists, lawyers and chefs to examine the vast range of possibilities offered by insects as a novel source of protein. The event is centred around a vital topic: insects as food and feed—specifically exploring how insects can play a pivotal role in feeding the future, including their potential as a sustainable food source for both humans and livestock. You can find the event on LinkedIn here.

At IAFF24 you will hear the latest information and take part in discussions that outline new developments and challenges that face the IAFF sector. This year the event will examine updates in legislation and policy changes, the continued development of the insect farming industry, approaches to insect welfare and the ethics of insect farming, plus marketing and public acceptance of insect based or insect feed food products. There will be three topic-led sessions covering:

  • Integrating insect protein as part of our food and feed systems.
  • Where are we now? Insect production and supply chains across Europe.
  • How can understanding developments in invertebrate welfare help insect farmers in the UK?

The following keynote speakers will lead the above sessions and the full programme will be announced soon.

  • Teun Veldkamp, Wageningen Livestock Research
  • Maureen Wakefield, Fera Science Ltd
  • Andrew Crump, Royal Veterinary College, University of London
  • David Tavernor, Fly2Feed

Feeding the Future: Using Insects as Food and Feed

Alongside the traditional conference, we are excited to be running a public panel debate the evening before, introducing using insects as food and feed, and looking at the challenges and opportunities faced as this becomes more widely considered. The discussion will be chaired by BBC journalist, Melanie Abbott. Melanie is a BBC Radio 4 journalist with You and Yours, Woman’s Hour and Farming Today, and will be joined by the following panellists:

  • Sarah Beynon, The Bug Farm
  • Nick Jonsson, Professor of Animal Health and Production, University of Glasgow
  • Larry Kotch, Co-founder and CEO of Flybox
  • Ralph Bishop, Poultry Nutrition and Innovation Manager, Premier Nutrition

Tickets should be purchased separately to the main conference and include a short drinks reception, supported by INBIA (Insect Bioconversion Association), to meet other guests and speakers.
