LEAF (Linking Environment And Farming) is the leading charity organisation delivering more sustainable food and farming. They work with farmers, the food industry, scientists and consumers, to inspire and enable sustainable farming that is prosperous, enriches the environment and engages local communities.

Agriculture worldwide is facing one of its greatest challenges: to produce enough nutritional food to fulfil the needs of our current and future population, while at the same time, protecting the environment and human health.

Finding and implementing innovative solutions to sustainability challenges cannot be addressed in isolation. It requires the involvement of a wide range of actors from across the food chain – farmers, retailers, researchers and NGO’s.

This involves working closely with our producers, providing them with the right tools and services to make meaningful changes on the ground and inspiring retailers and consumers in pursuit of the ultimate goal — a more sustainable and resilient food and farming chain.

Over the last six years, we have seen steady improvements in how our producers are managing their soil and water, conserving energy, protecting their crops, enhancing wildlife habitats and reaching out to their local communities. All delivered through our producers’ commitment to Integrated Farm Management (IFM) and their drive and determination to improve their farming practices.

The Farmer-Led Innovation Network (FLIN) are UK based organisations driving farmer-led innovation - working together to power up and increase the impact of farmer led innovation initiatives.

Nitrogen Efficient Plants for Climate Smart Arable Cropping Systems (NCS) is a four-year £5.9M ambitious research programme involving 200 UK farms and 18 partners. The project is funded by the Defra Farming Innovation Programme, delivered by Innovate UK. The consortium of UK companies, research institutes and farmer networks, led by PGRO, aims to bring about a reduction of 1.5Mt CO₂e per annum or 54% of the maximum potential for UK Agriculture. This will be achieved by increasing pulse and legume cropping in arable rotations to 20% across the UK (currently 5%). In addition, 50% of imported soya meal used in livestock rations will be replaced with home-grown feeds.  Both of these ambitious aims will be steered by science and proven by real farm enterprises, with significant benefits for both crop and livestock productivity, including cost savings of over £1bn/yr.

IPM NET is a new initiative which aims to improve the practical understanding and application of integrated pest management (for pests, weeds and diseases) for farmers,  and inform policy design promoting IPM strategies.

Building the right skills for the agricultural industry has been recognised as crucial to its future success.

Help us collate the knowledge sources, organisations and initiatives out there that are seeking to improve the farmed environment

As custodians of the landscape all farmers have responsibility to the wildlife and nature on their farms.  There are many networks, organisations, advisors and initiatives seeking to help farmers enhance wildlife and biodiversity. Increasingly this is being supported by Defra through ELMS and Local Nature Recovery schemes

The next Low Carbon Agriculture Show will take place on the 7 - 8 February 2023 at the National Agricultural Exhibition Centre (NAEC), Stoneleigh, to help farmers and landowners to rise to the challenge of producing more domestic, climate friendly food and energy.

This exciting event offers a chance to connect and collaborate with fellow farmers, educators and the wider industry, whilst discovering and exploring the best in education and outreach in the agri-food sector.

Though peas and beans have long been a trusted part of cropping rotations, it is perhaps only recently that the scope and value of their potential is being realised.
