Biofuels have been mandated in road fuel since 2008 to help reduce the fossil carbon emissions from petrol and diesel.
There are two bioethanol plants in the UK; Ensus in the North East and Vivergo in Humberside. Together they have capacity to use around 2M t of cereal grain, producing around 700M litres of bioethanol, as well as 700,000 t of high protein animal feed.
From 2004 to around 2014 ADAS undertook several research projects looking at how best to grow wheat for bioethanol. Some of the reports are connected below:

Triticale is a cross between wheat and rye. It has been shown to be a high yielding relatively low input crop that can do well in second cereal and less fertile conditions, but its adoption is hampered by lack of a reliable consistent market.
